Best Practices for E-Bike Battery Storage

If you’re not using your e-bike for a while, proper storage is key to maintaining your e-bike battery’s health. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Don’t store it fully charged. Instead, aim for a 40%-60% state of charge (SOC)—this helps prolong the lifespan of your battery.

  • Give it a refresh every few months. If you’re storing the battery long-term, discharge and recharge it every 2-3 months to keep it in good condition.

  • The best way to discharge? Ride your bike! Simply take your e-bike for a spin to bring down the charge.

  • No deep cycling needed. Unlike some batteries, lithium-ion ones don’t require full discharge cycles—and in fact, doing so can shorten their lifespan.

  • After storage, fully recharge the battery. Once charged, leave it on the charger for an extra 30 minutes to an hour to ensure proper cell balancing.

  • Don’t leave it plugged in indefinitely. Once your battery is charged, unplug it—leaving it connected for too long can cause unnecessary wear.

  • Store it in the right environment. Keep the battery in a cool, dry place, ideally between -20°C (-4°F) and 40°C (104°F). While lithium-ion batteries can handle cooler temperatures, they must be warmed to room temperature before charging.

  • Never charge a frozen battery. Charging in freezing or near-freezing temperatures can cause irreversible damage. Always let the battery warm up first!

Transporting Your E-Bike Battery

Planning to take your e-bike on an adventure? Keep these guidelines in mind when transporting the battery:

  • Avoid air travel. Lithium-ion batteries should be transported via truck, train, or ship, but not on airplanes due to safety regulations.

  • Keep it dry and well-ventilated. Never expose the battery to moisture or direct sunlight during transport.

By following these simple maintenance and storage tips, will help you can extend the life of your  e-bike battery. Treat your e-bike battery well, and it’ll reward you with reliable performance on every ride!
