Keep It Smooth

Keep your bike running smoothly with regular maintenance. A well-maintained bike is safer, more efficient, and lasts longer.

Maintenance Schedule

Before Every Ride (ABC Quick Check)

Air - Check tire pressure

Proper pressure prevents flats and improves efficiency. Check sidewall for recommended PSI.

Brakes - Test brake function

Squeeze levers to ensure brakes engage smoothly and stop the bike effectively.

Chain & Cranks - Quick visual inspection

Look for obvious damage, check that pedals turn smoothly, and chain isn't skipping.

Weekly

Clean and lubricate chain

Wipe chain clean with rag, apply bike-specific lubricant, wipe excess. Don't over-lubricate!

Wipe down frame and components

Remove dirt and grime to prevent corrosion and keep components functioning smoothly.

Check tire condition

Look for cuts, embedded debris, or excessive wear. Replace if tread is worn or sidewalls are cracked.

Inspect brake pads

Ensure pads aren't worn down and are properly aligned with rim or rotor.

Monthly

Deep clean entire bike

Use bike-specific cleaners, avoid high-pressure water on bearings. Clean chain thoroughly.

Check and tighten bolts

Check stem, seat post, wheel quick releases, and accessory mounts. Don't over-tighten!

Inspect cables and housing

Look for fraying cables, cracked housing, or stiff operation. Replace if necessary.

Check shifting and derailleur alignment

Ensure smooth shifting through all gears. Adjust if skipping or hesitating.

Every 3-6 Months

Professional tune-up

Comprehensive inspection and adjustment by qualified mechanic. Recommended 2x per year.

Replace consumable parts

Chain, brake pads, cables, and housing wear out and should be replaced regularly.

Wheel service

Check spoke tension, true wheels, service hubs and bearings as needed.

Headset and bottom bracket service

These bearing systems need periodic cleaning and re-greasing for smooth operation.

Essential Tools & Supplies

Multi-tool with hex keys

Essential

Most bike adjustments use 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm hex keys. Get a quality multi-tool with these sizes.

Tire levers (set of 3)

Essential

Plastic levers help remove tires without damaging tubes or rims. Never use screwdrivers!

Portable pump with gauge

Essential

Maintain proper tire pressure. Get a pump that fits your valve type (Presta or Schrader).

Chain lubricant

Essential

Use bike-specific lube. Wet lube for wet conditions, dry lube for dry/dusty conditions.

Chain cleaning kit

Recommended

Chain cleaning device, degreaser, and brushes keep your drivetrain running smoothly.

Bike stand or repair clamp

Recommended

Holds bike securely while working. Makes maintenance much easier and more thorough.

Torque wrench

Advanced

Prevents over-tightening expensive carbon components. Many modern bikes specify torque values.

Cable cutters

Advanced

Clean cuts on cables and housing prevent fraying and ensure smooth operation.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Chain Skipping Under Load

Symptoms:

  • Chain jumps between gears when pedaling hard
  • Inconsistent shifting
  • Noise during pedaling

Common Causes:

  • Worn chain
  • Worn cassette or chainrings
  • Poor derailleur adjustment
  • Dirty drivetrain

Solutions:

  • Check chain wear with gauge tool
  • Clean and lubricate drivetrain
  • Adjust derailleur if shifting is off
  • Replace worn components (chain, cassette, chainrings)

Squeaky or Weak Brakes

Symptoms:

  • High-pitched squealing when braking
  • Reduced stopping power
  • Spongy brake lever feel

Common Causes:

  • Contaminated brake pads
  • Worn brake pads
  • Dirty rims/rotors
  • Air in hydraulic lines

Solutions:

  • Clean brake surfaces (rims or rotors)
  • Replace contaminated or worn brake pads
  • Adjust brake cable tension
  • Bleed hydraulic brakes if applicable

Recurring Flat Tires

Symptoms:

  • Frequent punctures
  • Slow air leaks
  • Tire damage

Common Causes:

  • Embedded debris in tire
  • Worn tire tread
  • Poor tire pressure
  • Rim tape issues

Solutions:

  • Thoroughly inspect tire for embedded objects
  • Replace worn tires
  • Maintain proper tire pressure
  • Check and replace rim tape if needed

Wobbly or Untrue Wheels

Symptoms:

  • Wheel rubs against brake pads
  • Visible side-to-side movement
  • Bike feels unstable

Common Causes:

  • Loose or broken spokes
  • Impact damage
  • Normal wear over time

Solutions:

  • Check spoke tension
  • Professional wheel truing
  • Replace broken spokes
  • Consider wheel replacement if severely damaged

Seasonal Maintenance Guide

Spring Preparation

  • Complete bike inspection after winter storage
  • Check tire condition and replace if cracked from cold
  • Service suspension components
  • Replace cables and housing if stiff from moisture

Summer Care

  • Clean bike more frequently due to dust and sweat
  • Check tire pressure more often (heat affects pressure)
  • Monitor brake pad wear from increased riding
  • Keep bike out of direct sunlight when possible

Fall Tune-up

  • Prepare for rainy season with fender installation
  • Service brakes for wet weather performance
  • Apply frame protection wax
  • Check lighting system for shorter days

Winter Storage

  • Thorough cleaning and lubrication
  • Store in dry location
  • Slightly deflate tires to prevent cracking
  • Remove battery from lights and bike computers
